A delegation of Northern Territory Traditional Owners will likely testify before a federal inquiry into a massive lead and zinc mine s impacts on Aboriginal sacred sites.
Glencore s McArthur River Mine - about 750km southeast of Darwin - has been dogged by environmental incidents and alleged damage to cultural sites.
Committee members from the Juukan Gorge inquiry into the destruction of 46,000-year-old caves in Western Australia have travelled to tiny Borroloola, about 60km from the mine, for informal talks with concerned native title holders.

Traditional Owners awaiting NT Heritage Minister's decision on future of sacred sites

For locals, the river and its banks are like a garden, having provided sustenance for generations.
It also has a strong spiritual significance for the local people.
Gudanji woman Josie Davey and her husband Jack Green, a Garawa man, used to fish along the banks of the river, not far from town.
Now the couple say they’re too worried to fish in their usual spots.
“All we know is that there could be something in this water,” Mr Green told The Point.
“We had a meeting here one time and they said you can eat the fish, but only as much of the size of your hand, because they reckon the fish does carry lead.” ....

New report finds sacred sites under threat due to McArthur River Mine

The UNSW report found there were delays in responding to issues raised by the independent monitoring system, which was set up to protect the environmental and cultural interests in the area, with the mine site operator Glencore Australia, and the NT mining regulator failing to act quickly to mitigate these risks, or failing to take action on recommendations altogether.
The NT government recently approved an expansion of the mine, despite the authority responsible for the protection of Aboriginal sites rejecting Glencore s application.
The NT s Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) said they were concerned about the potential damage to sacred sites after Glencore was given the green light to increase the size of the mining pit and waste rock dump last year. ....
