Grants for $70,000 will support upgrades for two Northern Rivers community halls.
Wardell and Pimlico Halls need to make improvements to their facilities to make them safer and compliant with building standards.

“This funding will allow for various repairs and improvements at Pimlico Hall, including new handrails on the ramps, upgraded door, interior and exterior repainting, and accessible parking and pathways,” Mr Hogan said. “Wardell Hall upgrades will include new roofing, removal of asbestos from underneath the hall, new kitchen and toilets, and improved emergency exit ramps.
Premium Content The South Arm Bridge at Brunswick Heads has officially opened, following a major timber restoration. The project included an extensive list of works, that included posting of all 24 bridge piles using recycle girders from Council s Bangalow Bridges Replacement Project. It also included high-strength fibreglass wrapping of every pile and replacement of half the girders, where all new girders were recycled from Bangalow s Five Bridges Project. The job included replacement of half of the corbels, recycled from the Bangalow Five Bridges Project as well. 80 per cent of headstocks were replaced with new milled hardwood, while 100 per cent of the deck will be replaced by new milled hardwood.
Premium Content Works have officially started in the new Airport Boulevard in Ballina. The project started with the construction of the first roundabout on Southern Cross Drive, near the entrance to the airport. The whole project includes the construction of Airport Boulevard, the extension of and connection to Boeing Ave, a connection to North Creek Road, construction of three roundabouts, bulk earthworks and fill, kerb and gutter works, landscaping and underground services. With a final cost of almost $10 million, $3 million was provided by the Federal Government and $6.7 million came from Ballina Shire Council. The road is expected to be finished in six months, weather permitting.

Launching the It s Time to Care About Aged Care campaign, the Australian Aged Care Collaboration alliance will target key electorates where more than 800,000 older Australians live in an attempt to encourage the national parliament to address the sector s many challenges. AACC representatives Patricia Sparrow said more than 20 government aged care reviews in 20 years had failed to fix the inadequate system. After 20 years of missed opportunities, Australia cannot let the release of the final Royal Commission report later this month pass without taking real action, Ms Sparrow said.
Premium Content New body scanning equipment will be soon equipped at the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport. The new technology will be funded by Federal Government after it approved $2.3M in funding for the security upgrades. The funding comes from the Federal Government s Regional Airports Screening Infrastructure (RASI) grant program. The initiative provides funding to regional airports that must upgrade their security screening equipment, or commence screening, following new requirements from the Department of Home Affairs. The RASI program eases the cost burden for modifying airports, to accommodate the equipment, and to operate the screening points for a period of time, on the condition those costs are not passed on to airport users.
