Theatre and cultural activist Saiful Islam Mahmud passed away last night. Renowned thespian Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu confirmed the news to The Daily Star.
Mahmud, a freedom fighter, was the younger brother of noted actor Raisul Islam Asad. He participated in the anti-authoritarian movement in Bangladesh, alongside other cultural activists. He served as a founding member of Dhaka Theatre, Bangladesh Gram Theatre, and Cholochitro Sangshad Cine Art Circle. He was also an active member of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation and Bangladesh Pothonatok Parishad, among other organisations. ....

Bangladesh Group Theater Federation (BGTF) has decided not to perform stage plays during the lockdown. The Federation will not be organising stage shows anywhere in the country including Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Bangladesh Mohila Samity, informs Kamal Bayezid, Secretary General of BGTF to the Daily Star.
Safety should be our prime concern now and keeping this in mind, we have decided to stop the shows at this time. We are very glad that everyone in our federation has agreed with us and welcomed our decision, adds Kamal Bayezid.
Ramendu Majumdar, noted actor, playwright, and president of Bangladesh Centre of International Theatre Institute (ITI) supported this decision wholeheartedly. Avoiding crowds will be impossible at stage shows if we decide to keep operating and with the recent Covid cases, I think it is best to just stay at home, he says. B ....

Theatre troupe Padatik Natya Sangsad will stage their 33rd production Prerona tomorrow at Bangladesh Mahila Samity s Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium at 5 pm. State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid, MP will be present at the inaugural ceremony as chief guest.
The play narrates the story of a child who is suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder.
