TP52 racing to start off Newcastle with all guns blazing

A blast of cannon fire from Fort Scratchley will signal the start of SailFest Newcastle s signature event, the TP52 Gold Cup, around 12.30pm tomorrow (Saturday), with eight yachts hitting the line off Newcastle s coast.
It s believed to be the biggest gathering of the international class anywhere in the world over the past year, as Europe s Super Series was suspended in 2020 due to COVID and doesn t resume until July, while a number of Australian events were also cancelled.
Among the fleet are former Sydney-Hobart winner Ichi Ban, Patrice, Denali, Matador, Quest and Smuggler for the first time, joining Celestial and Koa from the previous Gold Cup in 2019. Aboard are many of Australia s top professional and champion sailors. ....

Full sail ahead for Newcastle Harbour regatta

A huge weekend of world-class sailing action on Newcastle Harbour begins tomorrow morning with the opening of SailFest Newcastle. Top crews from Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland, the Defence Forces, Sydney and Newcastle will race directly in front of the Honeysuckle Hotel as part of the Sailing Champions League Asia Pacific match-racing titles.
Saturday s racing will feature eight grand-prix TP52 ocean racing yachts, starting a passage race on the Harbour with the Fort Scratchley guns firing around 1pm.
Starting 2pm Saturday will be an iconic race known as the Cock of the Harbour to determine the fastest sailing boat on Newcastle Harbour. It s one of Australia s oldest sailing trophies. ....

Bumper weekend of events paves way for action-packed April


City of Newcastle
Thousands of sports fans will descend on Newcastle this weekend as the city plays host to two major national events, offering a taste of what is to come during an action-packed April.
The harbour will become a hive of activity from Saturday when the Sailing Champions League Asia Pacific brings its qualifying regatta to Newcastle for the first time, with some of the country’s best sailors battling it out over two days of fast-paced action on the water.
Football fans in their thousands will converge on Newcastle when McDonald Jones Stadium hosts a historic A-league double-header on Sunday, with Wellington Phoenix clashing with Brisbane Roar before hometown heroes the Newcastle Jets take to the pitch against heavyweights Adelaide United. ....

Victoria s Mornington Yacht Club will host the first leg of the Sailing Champions League - Asia Pacific this weekend with 12 teams entered from a number of clubs across Victoria, as well as one interstate team from Tasmania.
With the restart of the SCL program pushed back due to the impacts of COVID-19 in 2020, this weekend s event signals a much anticipated return for the popular rock-up-and-race format that was successfully launched in Australia over the last couple seasons.
Event director Mark Turnbull said he was thrilled to be able to get the SCL program back on track in the late part of this season and things were moving forward to deliver three great events between now and April. ....
