The government is thinking about letting the Amar Ekushey Book Fair begin in person this year after a delay amid the coronavirus pandemic but no date has been decided.

KM Khalid, the state minister for cultural affairs, said they will send a proposal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on beginning the fair on Feb 20, or Mar 7 or Mar 17.
“Because we want to end the fair before Ramadan begins on Apr 12,” he said at a press conference on Sunday after meeting with the organisers of the fair – Bangla Academy and Gyan O Srijanshil Prokashok Samiti or the Academic and Creative Publishers Association of Bangladesh. ....

The Amar Ekushey Book Fair, the biggest book festival of the country, will not be held in February this year amid the coronavirus situation in the country.
Bangla Academy Director General Habibullah Shirajee said, “We have postponed the book fair for the time being. We will observe the situation, discuss the matter with publishers and make a fresh schedule once the situation improves.”
Earlier, the academy requested to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs to suspend the book fair considering the coronavirus situation. In reply the ministry told them to arrange the book fair virtually. ....

The Amar Ekushey Book Fair is not going to be organised in February this year due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Bangla Academy has said.

Its Director General Habibullah Shirajee told bdnews24.com about the cultural affairs ministry’s decision on Sunday night that the fair cannot be held in the month of the Language Movement despite the publishers’ push.

Bangla Academy seeks to delay book fair over pandemic, angering publishers

The Bangla Academy wants to push back the Amar Ekushey Book Fair, which begins on Feb 1 every year, in 2021 considering the coronavirus outbreak.

The academy decided to file a petition seeking the delay at the cultural affairs ministry on Sunday, its Director General Habibullah Sirajee said on Friday.
He said they will request the government to consider the option of organising the fair online.
The decisions have angered the Gyan O Srijonshil Prokashok Samiti or the Academic and Creative Publishers Association of Bangladesh.
Farid Ahmed, president of the association, said the academy cannot unilaterally take the decisions as the fair is a “national matter”. “We know nothing about it (the decision to delay the fair),” he said. ....
