Nigerian Army removes journalist from WhatsApp group for questioning N2.6tn funds

The Nigerian Army has reportedly removed a journalist, Amadin Uyi from a WhatsApp group its communications unit created and operates for the benefit of newsmen.
The Director of Public Relations, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, and other spokespersons in the Army utilise the platform to disseminate information to reporters.
Uyi, the Abuja Bureau Chief of News Central TV, drew the WhatsApp group administrators’ irk after enquiring about arms funds.
He had asked Yermia to provide details of how the Army spent N2.6 trillion budget for counter-insurgency from 2015 till date.
“The COAS conference has posed many questions needing answers. The Chief of Army Staff says he will work towards addressing logistic challenges; this is really shocking, considering the fact that about 2.6 trillion naira has been spent between 2015 and 2019. We really want to know what he really means by this statement,” Uyi had asked. ....

DBN loans to small, medium businesses rise 89% to N191.9bn -

There has been a sharp rise in aggregate loans to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from the Development Bank of Nigeria Plc (DBN).
The development finance institution disbursed the sum of N191.9 billion as loans to MSMEs last year, representing 89 percent increase compared to N101.5 billion recorded in 2019.
DBN is a wholesale development finance institution, established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in collaboration with global development partners including the World Bank, African Development Bank (ADB), KfW Development Bank of Germany, French Agency for Development, and European Investment Bank to address the major financing challenges facing MSMEs in Nigeria. ....

Sinhala & Tamil New Year: Health guidelines to be issued today

The Ministry of Health stated that health guidelines issued in view of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year will be released today (02).
A special discussion was also held in this regard and the proposals made there will be further discussed.
The Health Promotion Bureau stated that this year s New Year festivities will be subject to restrictions.
Chief Epidemiologist at the Epidemiology Unit, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera stated that test to detect COVID-19 will be carried out targetting those employed in the trade zones and economic development zones leaving Colombo during the New Year season.

25 Sri Lankans arrested in India for drug trafficking

Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated that 25 Sri Lankans were arrested by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) for transporting narocotics on two raids which were conducted near the island of Minicoy.
During the first raid which was carried out on 05 March, 06 Sri Lankan nationals were arrested when the ICG inspected a fishing vessel that set sail from Chilaw.
It was also revealed that more than 200 kilograms of heroin were dumped in the sea during the raid.

NEXIM launches N10b Women & Youth Export fund

The Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) has moved to support women and youth exporters with a seed fund of N10 billion under a new programme coined Women and Youth Export Facility (WAYEF).  
The bank also announced a partnership with Afreximbank under which $50 million Project Preparation Fund (PPF) will be mobilised for Nigeria. 
The PPF is to provide technical assistance to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), including those promoted by women and youths towards presenting bankable proposals thereby improving their access to funds.
Managing Director of the bank, Mr. Abubakar Bello, who spoke at the launch in Abuja, described empowering women as smart business, owing to the multiplying effects of women’s businesses on their families and the larger society. ....
