Pfandbrief market takes crisis and regulation in its stride

The Pfandbrief market is in the middle of a tumultuous year which includes not only the adoption of the EU s Covered Bond Directive but also digesting the bloc s Taxonomy for Sustainable Activities. Of course, this is all happening against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns, which have hit the commercial real estate market that underpins much of the product. The transposition of the EU s Covered Bond Directive (CBD) into Spanish law is likely to be credit positive, according to a poll of delegates who attended the Association of Financial Markets in Europe’s 12th annual Spanish Capital Markets Virtual Conference on Thursday.

Swedish covered bond liquidity buffer under the spotlight

Swedish bankers have argued that proposed amendments to the country s covered bond law, which bring it into line with the EU s Covered Bond Directive (CBD), must demand that liquidity buffers in soft bullet bonds cover interest payments during any 12 month extension period, as opposed to covering interest and principal for 180 days a standard more commonly seen in hard bullet maturities.
The Swedish government appointed a committee of inquiry which recently published a consultative report setting out proposed amendments for the Swedish Covered Bond Act, and invited responses to be submitted no later than February 9.
