Two days ago MDN told you that the Atlantic Ocean near the country of Panama has become a virtual parking lot for LNG tankers as they wait up to 10 days to transit the Panama Canal on their way to Asia (see Panama Canal Becomes Bottleneck for U.S. LNG/LPG Heading to Asia). The ships, which cost on the order of $250,000 per day to transport the LNG, are now finding other routes. The primary alternative is the Suez Canal. Some (many?) LNG cargoes contain Marcellus/Utica molecules. It's important they get to market in a timely fashion. The Panama Canal currently allows just two LNG carriers to transit the Canal each day. Now Panama is going to lose business (and big bucks) by limiting the number of LNG carriers. They might to rethink the restriction. The primary beneficiary of Panama's limits is the Suez Canal in Egypt. Yeah, we had to look it up on a map. Looks to us like to get to Asia via the Suez Canal alternate route, ships will have to sail through the Straights of Gibra ....
