Manning denounces threats against PNG K286m fraud probe detectives

Papua New Guinea’s Police Commissioner David Manning has promised that the full force of the law and all resources at the Constabulary’s disposal will be used against policemen who flout the law and help criminals.
“We had two threats issued against police detectives,” he said.
“Criminals and policemen are involved.
“I will not stand for this and whether you are a criminal or a policeman who decides to engage or attack policemen, you will be dealt with equally under lawful means.
“If you want to be a criminal or align yourself with individuals or entities and challenge the police, then you have no place in the police force and I will ensure your speedy exit … straight into prison.” ....

The appointment of Manning was ruled unlawful by Justice David Canning on Friday.
In a statement, Onglo said the Marape-led Government respected the decision of the National Court and would do its utmost best to comply with all and any orders issued.
The minister also appealed to all members of the public and the constabulary to respect the decision of the court.
The court ruling said there was an error on the part of the Public Services Commission, as they did not take into account the absence of a specific tertiary qualication for candidates vying for the post. ....

Sheppard issue statement following father's arrest on conspiracy charges

Both Greg Sheppard’s law firm and the trustees of the fund who were allegedly defrauded of nearly AU$100m have come to his defence.
In a report published by
The Guardian, Sheppard’s law firm Young and Williams have told the publication the charges laid against him are politically motivated.
“The charges levelled against our firm’s partner are politically motivated and follow the PNG government’s failure in the court system. The charges will be defended vigorously,” said a representative of Young and Williams.

Greg Sheppard, a former Queensland lawyer and former manager of Brisbane pop act Sheppard, has been arrested in Papua New Guinea on charges pertaining to two counts of conspiracy and two counts of false pretence. ....
