An independent review of air quality at a controversial composting and worm farming business in Taranaki has found there is most likely a relationship between illness in the community and odours emitting from the Uruti site.

In April three people required ambulance treatment after encountering a strong smell near the Uruti site where 20,000 tonnes of oil and gas waste are stockpiled.

Taranaki composting site's 'rotten eggs' smell leaves nearby residents gasping for air


The hearing commissioner’s decision on the renewal of resource consents for the site is expected to be released on Wednesday.
The independent air quality report by Emissions Impossible​ director Lou Wickham​, of Auckland, was commissioned by Taranaki District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Jonathan Jarman, and forwarded to Uruti residents following three complaints by residents in April.
Wickham’s report on the Uruti site identified the “rotten egg” smell of hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, formaldehyde, and benzene were “likely” to be among the contaminants emitted from the site.
Effects from the odours can be significant and include headaches, retching, depression, stress and loss of appetite, they said. ....

Compost site complaints dismissed after regional council investigations

Several complaints were made about Remediation New Zealand s Urutī site in the weeks leading up to a hearing into its resource consent renewal. All 19 complaints were dismissed by the Taranaki Regional Council. (file photo)
Nineteen complaints made against a Taranaki organic composting company in the lead up to its resource consent renewal hearing have all been dismissed following regional council investigations.
The allegations were made against Remediation New Zealand’s site at Urutī, North Taranaki, between February 24 and March 23 for odour, and the discharge of material causing foaming in a nearby stream.
The hearing into the company’s application for renewal of its resource consents for the site started on March 24, with a decision expected by May 19. ....
