ELKINS Elkins City Council has certified the results of the March 2 Elkins Municipal Election. Meeting Wednesday, council certified the vote totals, which were unchanged from the results of Monday’s vote canvass at the Phil Gainer Community Center. During Monday’s vote canvass, council reviewed 32 provisional ballots and accepted 22 of them, changing some vote totals but not the outcomes of any races. Candidates had 48 hours from the close of the canvass to request recounts, but none did, enabling council to certify as final the declared vote tallies in all five city wards. The new mayor and the five city council members elected will be sworn in March 31 and take office April 1. ....

ELKINS The City of Elkins has announced its plan for canvassing the municipal election votes, a process which could change the results of the Fifth Ward Council race. Elkins City Council will meet at 11 a.m. Monday at the Phil Gainer Community Center to canvass the vote, which will include considering the 30 ballots which were marked “provisional” in the election. ....
bjohnson@theintermountain.com ELKINS Elkins voters elected a new mayor Tuesday and voted down a proposal to create a city manager position, according to unofficial election results. Jerry A. Marco won an overwhelming victory in the mayor’s race, totaling 707 votes out of the more than 1,000 ballots cast in the 2021 Elkins Municipal Election. Karen Wilmoth garnered 166 votes for mayor, while Andrew Carroll tallied 139 votes. D.C. Talkington received 5 votes for mayor. The full results of the election were released by the city at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning. Polls closed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening. The proposed city charter change that would have adopted a mayor/manager form of government, and would have created a new city manager position, was soundly defeated, with 321 votes cast in favor of the proposal, and 676 votes cast against it. ....
bjohnson@theintermountain.com ELKINS The number of ballots cast in Tuesday’s Elkins Municipal Election was more than double the amount of votes cast in 2019, city officials said. A total of 1,017 ballots were cast in Tuesday’s election, according to information provided Wednesday by the City of Elkins. These election results will not be official until after canvassing on March 8 and certification on March 10. The 1,017 ballots cast in 2021 “is approximately double the 476 total votes cast in 2019 and the 572 total votes cast in 2017,” Sutton Stokes, the city’s external affairs specialist, wrote in a press release Wednesday. “This large turnout, combined with the fact that poll workers had to tally responses to three ballot questions as well, explains why results took so long to get to city hall” Tuesday evening, Stokes wrote in the email. ....
