Dryden Working Circle Committee Shares Success So Far

The Dryden Working Circle Committee continues their efforts to bring both Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members together.
That’s what committee members, Executive Director of the Dryden Native Friendship Centre Cheryl Edwards and Dryden City Councillor Shayne MacKinnon spoke to the Rotary Club of Dryden about during their virtual meeting Wednesday.
“One thing the group was working towards was for City council to utilize a (traditional) land acknowledgement,” says Edwards. “I’m pleased to say, we have accomplished this. The City now has (and uses) two different land acknowledgements on their website. One for every day meetings and another for special events.” ....

City Of Dryden Reopening Facilities

With the provincewide shutdown over, the City of Dryden is reopening several municipal services.
The Dryden Pool & Fitness Centre and Arena is open weekdays from 5:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
On Saturday, February 20 the fitness centre will only be open from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and closed Sunday, February 21.
Starting the week of Monday, February 22 the fitness centre will be open 7 days a week with the same week day hours, Saturdays 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
It’s recommended that you make reservations for the gym, pool and arena walking. ....

Federal Funding For Red Lake Housing Project

The federal government is investing in the new Red Lake New Starts of Women housing project.
Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Ahmed Hussen has announced $4.2 million in funding for the 2-storey, 10-room transitional housing unit to support women and their children fleeing domestic violence.
The Kenora District Services Board is managing the development.
Hussen says gender-based violence continues to have devastating housing impacts on individuals, families and communities across the country and the government is taking the necessary steps to ensure the housing needs in Red Lake are met.
KDSB Chair Barry Baltessen says, “Community well-being, inclusion, and belonging begin with everyone having a safe and accessible place to call home.” ....

Ignace Alumni Shares Her Love Of Curling

For Ignace Alumni Sabena Islam, curling isn’t just a sport, it’s become a lifestyle. Originally from Pakistan, her parents came to Northwestern Ontario more than 50 years ago with new opportunities and adventures in mind – curling included.
She was first introduced to the sport at the Ignace High-school, which quickly grew into bigger events like the Tim Hortons Briers and Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
You could say that Sabena’s experience with the Canadian sport has come full circle,
“Now, more than 50 years after my parents came to Canada from Pakistan, I am working with the Winter Sports Federation to bring curling to Pakistan. I’m looking forward to sharing the sport our family loves with a new country and am excited to play a part in the curling stories of a new generation of curlers in Pakistan.” ....
