The second floor of 150 W. Wilson St. in Palatine will be leased by the village to the Palatine Park District, which will use it for office space for the CARE program that offers before- and after-school care for students in Palatine Township School District 15.

The Palatine Park District will rent the second floor of a vacant building owned by the village of Palatine as part of changes to the before- and after-school program offered to students of Palatine Township School District 15.
The program, called CARE, has been a collaboration between District 15 and local park districts, which jointly provided staffing and supplies, and shared profits. Parents pay a fee to enroll their kids. ....

11 months, thousands of meals: Palatine woman helps others during pandemic

Cathie Johnson grew up knowing what it s like to struggle with food insecurity, so when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she felt compelled to take action.
I thought, There s elderly people. There s veterans. There s Section 8 (low-income housing) people that can t go to the store. They can t go do things. That kind of motivated me, the Palatine resident said. I ve been lucky to move beyond my childhood experience, and I decided at that point that something had to be done.

She reached out to two friends in April and together they gathered a small group of volunteers. In the last 11 months, the initiative has grown into an organized group called People Helping People of Palatine that has served thousands of hot meals, provided 75 grocery bags and more than 100 meal kits, and distributed 185 water bottle care kits to people in need including seniors, veterans, families of local students, homeless residents and other community members. The board of Palatine Township School District 15 approved a $136.1 million property tax levy for 2020, a 4.9% increase over the previous levy.
The 2020 levy includes a 2.3% cost-of-living increase plus new property growth within the district, which officials last month estimated at $20 million. The board approved the levy without discussion Wednesday night.

Property taxes amount to 72% of District 15 s annual operating revenues.
District 15 taxes make up about 35.4% of Palatine homeowners property tax bills, and 33.5% for those in Rolling Meadows, who live in the district.
The 2020 levy increase will amount to an average additional $73 on property tax bills for the owner of a home with a 2019 market value of $350,000, although that s a really high-level guess, district officials said last month. ....
