Setting national standards April 27, 2021 After a long haul, this month’s (April 7) decision by the Council of Common Interest (CCI) to have uniform food standards in the whole country might be a step in the right direction to evolve internationally competitive regulations. But for developing a vertical consumer-friendly safe food regulatory regime, the provincial governments have to surrender the power of making standards back to the federal government by amending their food laws, and the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) has to have new legislation altogether. The provincial food regulatory bodies will only have the authority to enforce the federal government standards. ....
ISLAMABAD: The food authorities established in Sindh and Balochistan over the past few years are still facing teething problems and have not yet become fully operational, an institutional capacity assessment of the two authorities shows. The Growth for Rural Advancement and Sustainable Progress (Grasp) project funded by the European Union conducted the capacity assessment of the two food authorities at a stakeholders’ workshop in Islamabad in order to identify areas and activities for technical assistance and to develop a plan for strengthening them as per best international practices. The assessment report outlined the need for standard operating procedures (SOPs) for determining the standards of various edible commodities, harmonisation of food regulations, field visits, and storage and display of foods. ....

The food safety teams sealed the meat shop for selling substandard meat. A catering unit was fine for serving food in dirty dishes, and mixing Chinese salt in spices. A bakery was fined for failure to clean its production area and substandard storage facilities. It was also reportedly selling expired products. ....

While chairing the meeting, the provincial chief executive emphasised the need for education, health and sports in the province. “Measures are being implemented under a comprehensive strategy for the development of all sectors,” he said. “Along with laying a network of roads across the province, all available resources are being utilised to achieve socio-economic goals which will not only raise the living standards of the people of the province but also bring development and prosperity to Balochistan.” ....
BFA takes action against unhealthy food items Two baking plants were fined for littering Balochistan Food Authority (BFA) slapped fines on many food and beverage outlets across Kohlu on to control sale of substandard and unhealthy food items. BFA Director General Ibrahim Baloch initiated the raid a part of provincial drive. Two baking plants were fined for littering in the baking area and using substandard colors in production as well as operating rusty machinery and poor personal hygiene of the employees. Fines were also imposed on eight wholesalers and general stores for selling expired spices, baby food, beverages, banned Chinese salt and Gutka Pan Prag. Furthermore, three hotels were penalized for serving stale food and poor sanitation in general. ....
