QPRC 2021 Art Awards: $12,000 in prizes to be announced
The creative community have come out in force for the QPRC 2021 Art Awards, with 70 artworks submitted by talented residents from across the LGA.
The exhibition is a testament to the diversity of styles and high level of artistic skill incubating in the studios and farm sheds of the Queanbeyan-Palerang region.
This showcase will present a judging challenge for Monika McInerney, Director of the Belconnen Arts Centre and Gina Mobayed, Director of Goulburn Regional Gallery, who have the difficult task of selecting the awardees from such a high calibre field.
Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council has partnered with Bendigo Bank’s Braidwood and Bungendore Community Branches to offer an expanded art prize. The major prize will be $5000. The award is an acquisitive award with the winning artwork joining Council’s collection. ....

New Waste Strategy open for community comment
Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council’s draft Waste Strategy supports increasing waste sustainability and provides equitable services, fees and charges across the region.
Federal and State government waste targets, along with bans on exporting waste and increased environmental and WHS risk, have made a change in waste strategy necessary.
Council’s waste services currently reflect pre-amalgamation arrangements, which have created inconsistent servicing and charging outcomes.
“Council must ensure that it provides consistent, quality services to meet the needs of the community, environment and regulators. By improving our waste strategy now, we can provide a streamlined service that meets future sustainability requirements,” Queanbeyan-Palerang Mayor, Cr Tim Overall said. ....

Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council will update residents on a range of projects and initiatives, both online and in-person, at community meetings in Braidwood, Bungendore and Queanbeyan during May.
Following online-only community meetings in 2020, Council is welcoming residents back to face-to-face meetings in 2021, however given the size of venues there are some restrictions on numbers. To ensure that all residents can still engage, Council will continue to provide online participation.
“Even though the numbers of attendees will be restricted, it is fantastic to be able to have face-to-face community meetings again,” Mayor, Cr Tim Overall said. ....

Antique vehicles roll into Queanbeyan for a good cause

MORE than 600 antique cars, motor bikes, special interest and modified vehicles will be rolling into the Queanbeyan Showground on Sunday (February 28) for the annual “Shannons Wheels” vehicle display.
Hosted by the Council of ACT Motor Clubs (CACTMC), which consists of 75 motoring enthusiast groups throughout the region, the event will see makes and models from all over the world, proudly on display from 10am to 1.30pm.
“Whether it’s vintage, veteran, classic, or even a fire engine, there’s cars there for everyone to admire,” says CACTMC committee member Graham Gittins.
“There’ll be vehicles on show from the turn of the 19th century all the way up to yesterday’s models.” ....
