Australia: Meeting at Newcastle University lays bare union's refusal to fight job cuts

Australia: Meeting at Newcastle University lays bare union’s refusal to fight job cuts
A revealing discussion erupted at a National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) meeting at the University of Newcastle (UoN) last week as the union sought to corral academics and staff into another round of enterprise bargaining the very same framework that has facilitated an ongoing onslaught of cuts to jobs and conditions at universities across the country.
As is the case internationally, corporations and their governments have seized on the COVID-19 pandemic to accelerate a fundamental restructuring of workplace and social conditions, at the expense of workers. By the NTEU’s own estimates, some 90,000 university workers’ jobs were eliminated during 2020, and more cuts are being announced constantly, including at UoN and the universities of Adelaide and Western Australia. ....

Australian unions oppose installation of chancellor at Newcastle University but support pro-business restructure
Over the past month, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and the University of Newcastle Students’ Association (UNSA) have waged a cynical and diversionary campaign opposing the announcement that former National Party politician Mark Vaile was to become the new chancellor of the university in regional New South Wales.
The NTEU, the main academic union, and UNSA hailed management s recent withdrawal of the plans to install Vaile as a “victory” for University of Newcastle (UoN) students and staff. During their campaign, both had pointed to Vaile’s record as deputy prime minister in the Howard Liberal-National Coalition government, which carried out significant attacks on tertiary education, and his subsequent career on the boards of several coal mining companies. ....

More destructive job cuts unveiled at the University of Newcastle, Australia

More destructive job cuts unveiled at the University of Newcastle, Australia
Another round of staff and course cuts has been announced at the University of Newcastle (UoN) in the industrial city north of Sydney. Far from proposing any fight to defeat the attack, however, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) is continuing to plead for a cost-cutting deal with management and is volunteering to sacrifice wages and conditions.
On April 1, the NTEU circulated an email to members saying 110 full-time equivalent academic, teaching and professional staff positions would go, with management claiming the further cuts were necessary to overcome a $35 million deficit as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
