Goat herder wanted on Howth head for €45,000/year

The Old Irish Goat Society is seeking to hire a herder for goats in Howth, Co Dublin, where the Old Irish Goat herd will be used for grazing of the extensive heathlands on Howth, on behalf of Fingal County Council.
There is a salary of €45,000 available for the permanent role.
The herd will be based at a local farm and will be moved to various sites on Howth to reduce the cover of gorse, graze fire breaks and to create a more structurally diverse heathland vegetation. ....

Nigeria could gain by promoting more biodiversity awareness among its citizens


Poachers recently killed an elephant in Ogun State, south-west Nigeria. This was the second in the area in two years. It raises concerns about Nigeria’s dwindling elephant population. This is important as Nigeria is now one of Africa’s primary export hubs for ivory.
It also raises concerns about Nigerians’ attitude towards biodiversity conversation.
Based on this, in 2010 the Convention of Biological Diversity set new targets for achieving biodiversity action plans at various levels. These are known as the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
First among the targets is raising people’s awareness of biodiversity conservation. This is the first step towards achieving conservation success and Sustainable Development Goal 15 – halting biodiversity loss. ....

Macra and Teagasc launch PhD into the economic return of young farmers

Macra has launched a new Walsh fellowship PhD with Teagasc which will investigate the economic return of young farmers.
Announcing the new fellowship, outgoing Macra president Thomas Duffy told the association’s AGM on Saturday that Macra has always been to the forefront in calling for action but also giving its own commitments.
“That’s why I’m very proud to announce that Macra will be partnering with Teagasc to promote an area which has been unfortunately overlooked.
“We will be launching a Walsh fellowship, a PhD, to investigate the economic return of young farmers. ....

Sustainability is what the consumer wants – Arnold

Arnold said he was very disappointed over the last few months about the tone and the quality of both political and public debate about the climate and biodiversity challenge.
Both Irish and international consumers want sustainability when it comes to food, according to Tom Arnold, chair of the agri-food strategy to 2030.
Arnold told RTÉ’s
Countrywide on Saturday morning that the working group on the strategy had to produce a strategy that met this basic requirement.
“The terms of reference we were given were to come up with a vision for 2030, which had the agri-food sector delivering on sustainability in its three dimensions – economic, environmental and social – and to come up with the policies that would get us there. ....
