Thousands of children open Christmas gifts thanks to Valley Santa


Valley Santa saw an increase in requests for toys for children in need this holiday season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but a record number of donors chipped in to help.
Thanks to the many generous donors and a community-wide effort, more than 3,200 children in need throughout Luzerne County received Christmas gifts today.
This marked the 37th year for Valley Santa. a program sponsored by The Citizens’ Voice and Standard-Speaker newspapers, the City of Wilkes-Barre, Boscov’s and M&T Bank.
Attorneys Ruth and Kim Borland have served as coordinators of the program since the beginning and their children, Attorneys Sarah and Joe Borland, serve as active volunteers. ....

Valley Santa: Local moms live paycheck to paycheck


She asked for Valley Santa’s help in providing Christmas presents for her two children.
She is one of many parents who said they are struggling to make ends meet and asked for Valley Santa’s help.
Dawn, a mother of five children, said in her letter that she works but “it never seems like it’s enough to pay bills and food for my family.”
“Any help provided will be appreciated,” she wrote.
It’s not to late to donate to Valley Santa. The program relies on donations to purchase toys for children in need throughout Luzerne County at Boscov’s in Wilkes-Barre. ....

Valley Santa: Parents can't afford Christmas gifts for their children


Ann, a local mother of two boys, has been sick and missing time at work because of it.
She wrote a letter to Valley Santa asking for help to provide Christmas presents for her sons Josh and Patrick.
“I am struggling financially with everyday responsibilities,” Ann wrote. “I would be very grateful for any assistance.”
Her letter was one of many sent to Valley Santa from parents who can’t afford Christmas presents for their children.
Renee, another mother of two sons, also asked for Valley Santa’s help.
“I am struggling to make ends meet. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated,” she wrote. “My boys are good boys and I would really like to give them a good Christmas.” ....

Single dads ask for Valley Santa's help


While Valley Santa received many letters from struggling single moms, some single dads also asked for help providing Christmas gifts for their children.
Paul, a local father of two, said his children’s mother left in the summer and he is raising them on his own.
He works full-time but also pays a great deal of money toward child care bills.
“My children would appreciate any help you can give us,” he wrote.
Justin, another local dad, is raising his son by himself and also asked for Valley Santa’s help so he has a Christmas gift.
“He is an easy-going boy and would like anything,” Justin wrote. “I work extra hours but it still doesn’t seem like I can get ahead and save for the holidays.” ....
