How insecurity, poor facilities are forcing children out of school

In Kaduna State, despite the implementation of free and compulsory education, residents say insecurity is leading the factors responsible for school dropouts, particularly in rural communities where banditry attacks have become incessant.
Bala Udawa, a resident of Udawa in Chikun Local Government Area, said many children had been forced to abandon school for fear of being kidnapped.
On poor facilities, he said, “In my community, the school authority has no choice but to introduce shift for pupils. We usually had separate schools for both primary and secondary schools, but they now share the same school,” he said. He added that only dedicated parents would force their children to school in spite of the spate of insecurity. ....

Excitement as Kaduna community is gifted new school

It was a memorable day when the school was commissioned on Children’s Day as pupils and residents trooped out in their numbers to witness the commissioning by Ummi El-Rufai, wife of Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
Before the new building was commissioned, the population of 12,000 students had been cramped in few classrooms with as many as 200 students in a class.
The school was designed for a population of 500 students. However, the state government’s free feeding programme for schools saw the population shoot up to 12,000, leading to congestion.
The school’s Headmaster, Salisu Abdulsalam, said with the increase in population at the old site, it became almost unbearable to teach a class of between 150 and 200 pupils. ....
