The Vazhakulam Agro and Fruit Processing Company (VAFPCL) located at Muvattupuzha, considered the pineapple heartland of India, is getting ready for a leap in producing value-added products from fruits, having renovated its entire production machinery.
These machines were imported from Italy over two decades ago when the European Union-funded unit began functioning. The company has three production lines, including one to process and pack pineapple, apple, orange, guava and mixed fruit juices (under the brand name Jive), said Shibu Kumar, MD of VAFPC.
The second is a line dedicated to preparing pineapple concentrate, for which it recently began procuring the fruit for Horticorp at ₹15 per kg from farmers hard hit by the steep fall in its price. ....

With pineapple price sliding to ₹15 a kg for the best grade green quality and the ripe fruit fetching only ₹13 a kg in the wholesale market, the Kerala Horticulture Development Corporation has launched a procurement operation to support farmers.
Pineapple farmers said around 6,000 tonnes of ripe fruit were likely to be abandoned, as harvesting and transport operations had been hindered due to the lockdown. With Ernakulam district coming under triple lockdown, there is little movement of goods and produce out of the district. ....

VAFPC ventures hold out bright prospects for pineapple farmers
The Vazhakkulam Agro and Fruit Processing Company (VAFPC), jointly owned by the State government and pineapple farmers, is exploring the possibility of producing a Bromelain-enriched nutraceutical as well as pineapple leaf-based biodegradable, disposable cutleries, and plates with technical support from the Agro Processing Technology Division of CSIR National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram.
Detailed project reports are ready for the ventures that hold out prospects of a bright future for over 5,000 pineapple farmers in the State, who have brought around 18,000 hectares under the crop. ....
