The tobacco consumption is levying a burden of Rs 615 billion per annum on the national exchequer in terms of economic and health costs as the smoking-attributable direct cost is 8.3 percent of the total country’s health expenditure.
Anti-smoking experts said this in a virtual launch of “Tobacco Tax Reforms Model in Light of Health Cost Burden” by the Society for Protection of Rights of the Child (SPARC) here on Wednesday. They said tobacco annihilates 1.6 percent of GDP every year, taking out Rs 615 billion from the economy as health cost. ....

Tobacco use killed around 170,000 in 2017 in Pakistan: Nausheen Hamid

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Dr. Nausheen Hamid, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination, has shared that 30 million adults (age 15 +) or about 19.1 percent of adults currently use tobacco in Pakistan. This consumption is the leading cause of death due to cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. She shared the alarming statistic that in 2017, tobacco use killed an estimated 170,000 people.
She expressed these views while speaking at a virtual launch of the “Tobacco Tax Reforms Model in light of Health Cost Burden” organized by the Society for Protection of Rights of the Child (SPARC) here Wednesday. ....

Tobacco-free postcard campaign launched

ISLAMABAD: To create awareness of the dangers of tobacco and demand visible increase in taxes on the tobacco industry, first of its kind ‘Tobacco-Free Youth Postcard Campaign’ has been launched in Islamabad.
The campaign is mainly launched by ‘Chromatic’ Trust. Under the banner of CTFK, Chromatic, SPARC, and PANAH held a press conference and formal launch ceremony on Sunday. Tobacco-Free Youth Postcard Campaign will be active for a month. The launch event started with the inaugural remarks by Salman Farooque, Programme Manager Chromatic who introduced the issue to the participants. He thanked the media for joining the event.
Shariq Mahmood Khan, Project Director Chromatic briefed the media about how digital Influencer and mentor Imran Ali Dina agreed, to formally launch the campaign. He also briefed the press/broadcast and digital media about the importance of the campaign. ....

Islamabad: Civil Society Alliance (CSA) has called upon the government to impose taxes to protect children from the dangers of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSB).
They demanded this in a meeting of Civil Society Alliance jointly organized by Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH), National Commission on the Rights of the Child (NCRC) and Child Rights Movement (CRM) on Thursday.
General Secretary (PANAH) Sana Ullah Ghumman, Chairperson, NCRC Afshan Tehseen Bajwa, and National Coordinator, CRM Zahra Naqvi hosted the event.
