ISLAMABAD: Annual consumer inflation slightly eased to 8.90 per cent during the outgoing fiscal year (FY21) from previous year’s 10.74pc, showed data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Thursday.
Inflation slightly fell to 9.7pc in June from 10.9pc in May mainly because of improvement in supply of food items and reduction in prices of essential kitchen items. Inflation remained in double digits from March to May 2021. It was mainly driven by a double-digit growth in food inflation in both urban and rural areas. ....

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) began another week on a bearish note, with the benchmark index plunging over 750 points as the market reacted to developments on the economic and political front.
In the backdrop of a worsening economic scenario, coupled with rising coronavirus cases, the index fell below the 44,000-point mark on Monday. The economic instability following formation of an Economic Advisory Council (EAC) and change of finance minister ahead of budget impacted the investment climate.
In a surprise move, the prime minister on Saturday approved the reconstitution of the EAC but did not appoint former finance minister Shaukat Tarin as its convenor. ....

KARACHI: The country’s cellphone imports swelled by 51.5 per cent to $1.311 billion in 8MFY21 as compared to $865m in the same period last year, according to the data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday.
An official in a cellphone company said that the mobile phone market is now upbeat with burgeoning demand in the price range of Rs10,000-40,000 in which many companies are competing with one another.
He said the main buying is coming in the Rs10,000-25,000 range smartphones since online education has gained momentum followed by massive demand for food items through online facilities in the last one year. ....
