ISLAMABAD, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) A policeman escorting a polio vaccination team was shot dead in Pakistan s northwest district of Karak on Tuesday, the latest attack on efforts to protect children from the crippling disease, said officials.
District Police Officer of Karak Irfanullah told local media that unknown gunmen riding motorcycles opened fire on the cop providing security to the polio workers in the Takht-e-Nasrati area of Karak, a district in the country s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.
The polio vaccination team remained unhurt in the attack, said the official, adding that the polio vaccination drive has been stopped in the area after the incident. ....

Nationwide Polio immunization drive begins

Five-day national Polio immunization drive to vaccinate over 40 million children under the age of five starts on Monday across Pakistan.
A supplementary dose of Vitamin A drops will also be administered to the children aged 6 to 59 months during this campaign to help build general immunity to protect them from polio and other diseases.
According to Pakistan Polio Eradication Program, around 285,000 polio frontline workers will visit parents and caregivers at their doorstep, adhering to strict COVID-19 precautionary measures and protocols while vaccinating children.

Taliban delegation visits Pakistan at invitation of Islamabad

A Taliban delegation, led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the political deputy head of the Taliban’s office in Doha, is expected to meet with high-ranking Pakistani officials on Wednesday, after arriving in the country.

Among the officials the Taliban is expected to meet is Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Among the issues expected to be focused on are problems relating to refugees, relaxation and facilitation of the movement of Afghan nationals to Pakistan, as well as problems Afghan traders face.

Afghanistan and Pakistan to work together to fight polio

Pakistan and Afghanistan will further strengthen cross-border cooperation next year by synchronizing campaigns to fight the polio virus.
According to Pakistan’s Polio Eradication Program, this was decided during a video conference on Tuesday between polio eradication teams in Afghanistan and in Pakistan.
The polio eradication teams of both countries agreed to continue sharing information and the synchronization of campaign dates in 2021 to tackle poliovirus transmission effectively, a statement issued by the Polio Eradication Program read.
“With intertwined communities and massive population movements between Pakistan and Afghanistan continued alignment of the vaccination schedule of both countries is critical to stop transmission of the virus,” the organization stated. ....
