AP/File LAHORE: Frustrated by the performance of Pakistan’s Polio Programme, the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) has declared that the number of missed children in 2021 vaccination rounds all over the country is still higher than it was in 2018 and 2019. The IMB provides an independent assessment of the progress being made by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in the detection and interruption of polio transmission globally. Towards a polio-free Pakistan in 2021 While Pakistan successfully tackled the pandemic, questions were raised as to why we couldn’t eradicate polio so far Year 2020 will be remembered for the challenges it brought to global public health. Like others, Pakistan had to focus on mounting best possible response to control Covid-19. But perhaps the most critical contribution came from the national polio eradication programme. By using all available resources, its team helped build Covid surveillance and data management systems and raised awareness among people. While Pakistan was applauded for successfully tackling the pandemic, questions were raised as to why we couldn’t eradicate polio so far. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only ones left where wild polio virus continues to threaten children’s health underlying the urgency we must work with in order to deliver a polio-free world. ....
January 8, 2021 The year 2020 has (finally) come to an end. The year will be remembered for the challenges it brought to global public health, and to our lives. Like other nations around the globe, Pakistan had no choice but to focus on and address the most pressing and immediate need of the hour – mounting the best possible response to control the Covid-19 pandemic. While the battle is still on, the resilience and courage demonstrated by the Pakistani nation thus far has been exemplary. All of the government’s and many private sector and civil society stakeholders made enormous contributions to the battle against Covid-19. But perhaps the most critical contribution came from the national Polio Eradication Programme. By using all available resources, the disciplined team of the polio eradication programme has made remarkable contributions in building Covid-19 surveillance and data management systems and raising awareness among people. ....
