Tuesday night freeze impacts on orchards appear to be limited


The impacts to this year’s apricot crop are a bit more up in the air, but a freeze Tuesday night appears to have generally spared local peach growers.
Bruce Talbott of Talbott Farms in Palisade said that fruit trees are only now breaking out of their winter dormancy, helping protect them from the impacts of Tuesday night’s freeze.
“Everything except apricots is still very durable. We can probably take 10 degrees (as a low) and still have a peach crop and we weren’t there. We weren’t close to there,” he said.
The official Grand Junction low temperature Wednesday morning was 20 degrees. Kris Sanders, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Grand Junction, said the agency received reports of low temperatures ranging from 16 degrees just north of Fruita to 29 in Palisade. However, localized temperatures in the Palisade area can vary widely based on factors such as topography, and Talbott said Talbott Farms recorded a low of 18 degrees at o ....

Apricot-Filled Cookies Recipe by Julie Rothman - The Baltimore Sun


2 Cups flour
1 (8-ounce) jar apricot preserves
Powdered sugar, for dusting
Step 1: Preheat oven to 375 F.
Step 2: In a large bowl with a mixer, cream 1 cup softened butter and 8 ounces softened cream cheese together until well-blended.
Step 3: Add 2 cups flour and 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and mix well. Refrigerate dough for 3 hours.
Step 4: Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut dough in 3-inch circles and fill each with 1 teaspoon of apricot preserves. Fold circles in half and press with fork to seal.
Step 5: Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake in oven for 7 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pan and quickly roll in powdered sugar. ....

Apricot Glazed Chicken Recipe by Claire Perez - South Florida Sun Sentinel


Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
5 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
2 Tablespoons soy sauce
Step 1: Preheat oven to 400 F.
Step 2: Place a 5-to-6 pound chicken in a roasting pan on a rack, breast side up. Sprinkle the cavity and outside of chicken with salt and pepper. Gently loosen the skin on the chicken breast by placing fingers under the skin. Rub outside of the chicken with 1 tablespoon butter. Rub 3 tablespoons butter under the breast skin.
Step 3: Roast chicken for 60 minutes, basting every 15 minutes with pan drippings.
Step 4: In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, heat 1 tablespoon of butter. Saute 3 minced garlic cloves until fragrant but not browned, about 1 minute. Add 1/2 cup apricot jam, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice and 2 tablespoons soy sauce. Cook, stirring, until combined, and set aside. ....
