A former band frontman who raped 14 women and girls across Newcastle has been sentenced to 28 years in jail.
Daniel Hanson, 34, who also went by the pseudonym Jimmy Beloved, pleaded guilty to abusing the girls and young women between 2005 and 2014.
Six of his victims read powerful victim impact statements to the District Court in Newcastle last week, describing the ongoing pain, trauma and devastation Hanson s actions have caused, and how their lives have been changed by the abuse. ....

Victim support service falling victim to funding cuts

CANBERRA’S longest-existing victim support service that “runs on the smell of an oily rag” fears without any government funding it may close its doors.
The ACT’s Victims of Crime Assistance League (VOCAL) in Narrabundah is also crying out for volunteers amid a need for its services.
The organisation’s former co-ordinator Marie-noelle Cure, 68, is still the driving force behind the organisation, but has not been paid a cent since 2011 when the service’s government funding was scrapped. ....
