U.S. Workplace Fatalities Reach Highest Number Since 2007 -- Occupational Health & Safety

The number of workplace fatalities has reached a new peak, with 5,333 deaths recorded in 2019.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported a two percent increase in fatal workplace injuries for the year of 2019.
In 2019, 5,333 fatal work injuries occurred, which is the highest recorded number of workplace deaths since 2007.
“With the innovative tools available to today’s employers nationwide, it’s concerning that we’re continuing to see higher numbers of worker fatalities,” said ASSP President Diana Stegal. “Most occupational incidents are preventable given today’s technologies and proven safety and health strategies.”
More specifically, transportation deaths have increased by two percent as well, while deaths from falls, trips and slips increased by eleven percent. ....

OSHA Introduces New Inspection Program for Businesses with High Injury Rates -- Occupational Health & Safety

The Site-Specific Targeting Directive will apply to non-construction businesses.

OSHA announced on December 16 that it is updating its inspection program to focus on workplaces with frequent health incidents.
The inspection program directs agency enforcement resources to places that have the highest injury and illness rates. The new Site-Specific Targeting Directive (SST) targets non-construction establishments that have 20 or more employees.
The SST directive includes changes such as the creation of a new targeting category for establishments that have consistent injury and illness rates, as well as allowing records only inspections to occur when it is determined that incorrect data led to the establishment’s inclusion in the program. ....

FDA Authorizes First Non-Prescription Home Coronavirus Test -- Occupational Health & Safety

The test delivers results to your smartphone within 15 minutes of collecting a sample.

The FDA authorized the first coronavirus test that can be bought in a store without a prescription on December 15, says NPR.
The at-home test is made by the Australian company Ellume and will be available in January. It is administered using a swab and produces results within 15 minutes via a smartphone app. Collecting the sample for testing takes about five minutes.
“[The] authorization is a major milestone in diagnostic testing for COVID-19,” FDA Commissioner Stephan Hahn said.
The test will cost about $30 and can be used for both adults and children as young as 2-years-old. ....

The FDA issued emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine on December 11.
FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D. called the authorization a significant milestone in battling the pandemic in the United States. The data presented by Pfizer proves that the vaccine may be effective in preventing coronavirus, according to the FDA.
“While not an FDA approval, today’s emergency use authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine holds the promise to alter the course of this pandemic in the United States,” said Peter Marks, Director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. ....

Construction Workers Fatalities in Ontario, Canada On the Rise -- Occupational Health & Safety

Ontario, Canada has had a steady increase in construction worker deaths in the past six years.

The number of construction worker deaths in Ontario, Canada has been on a steady rise since 2014, according to CBC.
The average number of deaths that occur at Ontario construction sites hovers at around 20 per year. Serious injuries among construction workers have also been on the rise in the 2014 fiscal year, the number of injuries was 231.In 2019, it increased to 357.
“Certainly over the last number of years, the number of fatalities in the sectors that we serve has really dogged the industry,” said Enzo Garritano, president and CEO of Ontario’s Infrastructure Health and Safety Organization. “The number of fatalities has not gone down in a trend of any sort.” ....
