Ill-equipped couple wearing street shoes risked icy climb up Taranaki Maunga

Maindonald was carrying an ice axe and crampons and wearing boots to dig steps into the ground.
The conditions were clear at 3pm and the sun was about to disappear behind the mountain.
“I told them that they shouldn’t be on the mountain dressed as they were in the conditions.”

The tourists walked passed warning signs alerting climbers to be prepared for the alpine conditions.
Maindonald told the couple two men had died the week before not far from where they had been.
“I told them they were crazy to be up here.”
The couple replied thatthey knew about the tragedy and were terrified, but had decided to take the risk, Maindonald said. ....

Predator-free funding a timely boost to eradicate pests in Taranaki

Te Kōhanga Āhuru pest control involves three North Taranaki iwi - Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Maru.
Te Kōhanga Āhuru project administrator Marlene Benson said the project would create sustainable employment for the wider whānau and hapū, and ensure that the forests within their rohe are safe for kiwi.
The three iwi involved in the project have a deep attachment to the land, she said.
Experience Purangi conservation trust general manager Rebecca Somerfield said the funding would allow the East Taranaki Environment Trust to expand pest control boundaries out 5775ha to 18,775ha, and 15 future staff. ....

Conservation group wants feral cats declared pests in Taranaki Regional Council management plan

Geary said there was a need to control feral cats to prevent the spread of toxoplasmosis in marine environments, and bovine tuberculosis among cattle.
Toxoplasmosis, which is spread by cat faeces entering waterways, is understood to be the primary cause of deaths of the rare Maui s and Hector dolphin along the North Island’s west coast.
