For young children and non-swimmers, Love said an adult needs to be within an arm’s reach at all times so that “you can grab them and they can grab you if anything happens.”
“A lot of people don’t realize that drowning when it occurs can very fast and very silent and it doesn’t look like what you see in the movies,” Love said. “It’s not loud. It’s not splashy. It is that quick, it is that silent.”
Statistics show that people can drown in as little as 10 to 15 seconds and all that is needed is enough water to cover the mouth and the nose to prevent proper breathing happening, Love said. The most recent stats show that the death rate for children four and under is 1.1 deaths per 100,000 nationally but 3.4 per 100,000 in Manitoba. ....

Before taking a dip in the lake, Manitobans are being asked to dive into water safety.
Dr. Christopher Love is the Water Smart and Safety Management Coordinator with the LifeSaving Society, an organization dedicated to preventing drownings. The past weeks have seen four drownings, and several reported near-drownings in Manitoba.
One of the statistics that we see year after year is that males have a far larger number of drowning fatalities than females.
In 2020, 25 people downed in the province, with 78 per cent of those drownings being men. Love says this is likely because men are risk takers near the water. Most drownings in Manitoba occur between May to September in lakes, ponds, and rivers. ....
