A little more than three years after a fire destroyed the homes of 27 Indigenous families in East Vancouver, a new vision for the property will soon rise from the ashes. But not without opposition.
A four-storey apartment building near Commercial Drive operated by the Vancouver Native Housing Society has been empty ever since a fire days before Christmas 2017 left the building uninhabitable. But with city council’s recent approval of a redevelopment plan, the society will more than double the number of affordable homes on the site.

Shortly before midnight Sunday, Claudette Abraham was relaxing in her tent when she heard the first explosions, followed by a woman screaming “Fire!”
“Some people were trying to keep warm, and their propane tanks exploded on them last night,” Abraham said Monday. “It was really big bangs, big popping sounds. And the flames, holy smokes, they were like 25 feet in the air.”

Abraham has been living in Strathcona Park since June, after being evicted from her home. Earlier in the fall, the camp numbered about 380 tents and 200 homeless residents, according to outreach workers, but Abraham estimates there are about 100 campers there now. ....
