Downed power lines 'hindering SSA crews'

The Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) says it has removed about 85 per cent of fallen trees following the passage of Hurricane Elsa on July 2 and is getting back on track with its usual garbage collection.
However, public relations officer Carl “Alff” Padmore has asked residents to bear with them as they navigate downed power lines.
“We have been experiencing some low-hanging wires. They were there before the hurricane but, naturally, with the visitation of Hurricane Elsa, they would have dropped lower. A number of areas in Christ Church, St Philip and St Joseph remain troublesome for us,” he told the DAILY NATION yesterday. ....

BL&P: Blame telecoms too

Barbados Light & Power Company (BL&P) says it should not be solely blamed for the estimated 200 poles which fell during the passage of Hurricane Elsa last week.

“We have observed that there are some untidy telecommunication lines on our poles and this is no secret. This is very concerning to us and it is something that I believe, after reflecting over the last few days, that we really need to revisit and engage the telecom providers on the infrastructure on our poles and how this impacts our poles and our ability to provide the service to our customers,” said Griffi ....

BL&P was ready, says boss

Barbados Light & Power Company (BL&P) is rubbishing claims that it was caught napping and unprepared for the passing of Hurricane Elsa last Friday.
Up to yesterday, the Canadian-owned utility company reported it had restored power to more than 85 per cent of the customers who lost electricity in the early morning hours of Friday, when Elsa, a Category 1 hurricane, affected the island, destroying 145 houses with more than 2 300 reports of damage.
The company has been heavily criticised about the perceived slow process of power being returned in the days that followed, with about 20 000 customers still without electricity yesterday.
“We are very, very prepared for hurricanes,” managing director Roger Blackman told a press conference held yesterday at the National Emergency Operations Centre, located at the headquarters of the Department of Emergency Management, Warrens, St Michael. (BA) ....
