2 held for setting on fire statue of Rajiv Gandhi | Ludhiana News

LUDHIANA: The police arrested two men for setting on fire the statue of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi near Salem Tabri on Wednesday.
Passersby and those working near the spot doused the fire.
After learning about it, several Congress men gathered at the spot and got the statue painted. Once again, Congress’ Gursimran Singh Mand wiped the statue with his turban, stirring a controversy.
In December 2018, some Akali leaders had smeared the statue with black paint and Mand had cleaned it with his turban.
ADCP-1 Pragya Jain said, “Accused Ramandeep Singh Nihang and Satpal Singh Navi have been arrested. Both have a criminal background. Ramandeep has six FIRs against him and Satpal 17.” ....

Cong stages protest over lack of proper vaccination strategy | Ludhiana News

Ludhiana: Congress workers, led by senior leader Parminder Mehta, staged a protest against the central government, accusing it of failing to handle the vaccination process of people in the age group of 18 to 45 years. Sitting near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi outside municipal corporation office, Mehta and others shouted slogans against the Centre.
Mehta said, “Prime Minister has misguided the public about manufacturing the vaccine in India. This is evident from the fact that already several courts in the country have pulled up the Centre over the poor arrangements made by it in handling Covid crisis. Till date, millions of people, including children and those who are in the 18-45 years age group are deprived of the vaccine, but crores of vials of vaccine were gifted for free to other countries. PM Modi is still fooling people by making tall claims, but doing nothing on ground to vaccinate the masses at the earliest.” ....

Despite opposition, panel asks officials to float tenders to hire pvt firm for recovery

Ludhiana, May 18
Though SAD and BJP leaders have been raising questions over the Municipal Corporation’s plan to hire a private firm for the recovery of water supply and sewer charges in the city, a committee led by Senior Deputy Mayor Sham Sundar Malhotra has given nod to float tenders to invite interested firms for the task.
Malhotra said: “We have made the final decision in today’s meeting that a firm will be hired to conduct the recovery of pending water supply and sewer charges from users. MC officials have been asked to float the tenders for the same.” ....
