Northampton Police officer injured in head-on crash: Helps other driver despite broken leg

Criminal charges are pending against the other driver and the crash remains under investigation, police said.
Officer Matthew Knowlton was patrolling west at about 11:27 p.m. on Route 66 when a vehicle approached him traveling 70 mph, which is more than twice the posted 35 mph speed limit for the street, police said.
The driver, whose name was not released, then crossed into the oncoming lane. Knowlton attempted to avoid the collision but could not, police said. ....
