He threatened to kill doctors, set off bomb; judge questioned releasing of mentally ill man

Agopsowicz was arrested almost immediately for breaching court orders not to consume alcohol and drugs, after police watched him down two beers then smoke crack cocaine in a glass pipe outside 844 Johnson St., a supportive-housing facility.
At his bail hearing the next day, Victoria provincial court Judge Ted Gouge made it clear he believed Agopsowicz was a public danger and should be kept in hospital.
“Please convey to Andrew Agopsowicz’s physicians that I think the decision to discharge him from hospital was a mistake and we can only hope it does not have tragic consequences,” said Gouge.
Agopsowicz was found dead of a suspected drug overdose at 2 a.m. on April 29, less than 12 hours after his release from custody. ....

Province, city step up efforts to move people without homes indoors

Attorney General and Housing Minister David Eby pledged last week to exceed that goal and said the province will have extra spaces if needed.
The reopening of Save-On-Foods arena as a temporary shelter will add 45 beds to the mix. Heidi Hartman of B.C. Housing said another 30 to 40 units will be reopening at Capital CityCenter Hotel, where a fire displaced dozens of people in November.
In addition, the province is providing rent supplements to help people move from supportive housing into market rentals, thereby freeing up space for people from the parks.
“Our work isn’t done,” Hartman said. “We’re actively looking in community for other options and we’ll definitely be putting those rent supplements to use.” ....

Our Community: Collecting coats for Cool Aid, cold walks for Our Place, grants for gender equality

“This allows everybody to safely support Our Place by taking a walk around their own neighbourhood,” said Julian Daly, executive director at Our Place. “This walk allows the community to come together and show how much they care about the most vulnerable members of society.”
The walk in the cold gives people an opportunity to experience what so many people without homes endure every night, Daly said.
“On the coldest nights, we try to get as many people indoors as possible. But, unfortunately, there are still people left outside. ”
Participants can organize their own two to five-kilometre walks by themselves or form teams with members of their households or safe bubbles and collect pledges online. ....

Cool Aid gift card program aims to make Christmas merry for those in shelters

Building on the success of last year’s gift card program, Cool Aid is again offering its Everyone Deserves Joy program, which allows people to buy online gift cards for people in need.
“The people who serve, especially those staying in a shelter, they just have so little,” said Lori Angelini, Cool Aid’s manager of philanthropy. “So getting these gift cards, knowing there there are people out there who do care about them, is very meaningful.”
She said the gift cards are an important way to give people choice around what they buy for themselves. Cool Aid supports more than 200 people living in four emergency shelters: Sandy Merriman House, which supports women, Rock Bay Landing, Next Steps, and the Cool Aid Temporary Shelter. ....
