National Tourism Week (May 23-30) traditionally signals the kick-off of tourist season, and the CEO of Kootenay Rockies Tourism is encouraging people in the region to celebrate the occasion by staying local and supporting local tourism businesses.

Of all B.C.’s economic sectors impacted by COVID-19, you could argue tourism and hospitality has been hit the hardest.
The numbers show just how much of a downturn the sector has taken because of the pandemic.
In a pre-COVID year, tourism generates $3.5-billion and supports 70,000 jobs in the Vancouver Island region
But domestic overnight visitation to the island is down 43 percent, since the most recent public health orders and guidelines were implemented.
Research collected by the BC Regional Tourism Secretariat also shows:
Only 17 percent of BC tourism businesses in the five regions have been operating as usual; ....

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C – The owner of Northern Rockies Fitness says she’s prepared for when travel restrictions are lifted due to help from the BC Tourism Resiliency Network.
Northern Rockies Fitness was created by Jocelyn McDonald five years ago, offering Nothern BC hiking retreats. She experienced limited cancellations once the province went into a state of emergency last year due to the pandemic, but that changed when travel restrictions were put in place. Now she is focusing on local with help from the BC Tourism Resiliency Network.
The program was created by the BC Regional Tourism Secretariat to support operators within the North, Cariboo, Thompson-Okanagan, Kootenays and Vancouver Island. ....
