Coronavirus outbreak: IIT Kharagpur asks scholars to go home

IIT Kharagpur has asked its research scholars to vacate hostels and go home because of the “limited space of isolation facilities and treatment”. Late on Wednesday, the registrar issued a notice that said the institute will remain closed from May 14-23.
An email that the institute authorities sent to the hostel wardens on Wednesday morning said: “Institute authorities have decided that due to limited space of isolation facilities and treatment, it is imperative that students should now proceed to their homes”.
In December last year, the institute had allowed around 800 of its 4,000-odd research scholars to return to the campus in batches. ....

Coronavirus outbreak: IIT Kharagpur puts on hold calling back research scholars to the campus

Lack of beds at hospitals to take care of Covid patients has prompted IIT Kharagpur to put on hold calling back research scholars to the campus, said an official of the institute.
The dean of student affairs, Somesh Kumar, has told the scholars who were to return to the campus over the next few weeks to defer their journey because Covid beds in hospitals are not available in enough numbers.
Thirty cases have been reported on the campus recently. Those infected include five students and the rest are faculty and staff. Some are being treated in hospitals in Calcutta, while the rest are in isolation on the campus, officials at the institute said. ....

Covid-19: IIT Kharagpur defers plan to bring back students

IIT Kharagpur has put on hold its decision to call back 300 final-year undergraduate students and around 3,000 research scholars following detection of fresh Covid cases on the campus.
The 300 final-year students, who need to attend in-person lab classes, were set to return to the campus from April 16. The research scholars have been coming back in batches since December.
Registrar Tamal Nath said: “We are deferring the recall of BTech students for some time considering the circumstances. We will review the situation in early May and then take a call on the way forward. The return of the research scholars is also being deferred for some time. We will review the situation later and proceed.” ....

An IIT Kharagpur order has asked a doctor to oversee the administrative activities of “Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Institute of Medical Sciences and Research” with “immediate effect”.
The directive has prompted a section of teachers and alumni to point out that the medical establishment has been “surreptitiously” named after the Jana Sangh founder although President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had in 2007 laid the foundation stone for a facility dedicated to Dr B.C. Roy, the builder of modern Bengal. ....
