Durban woman found with Sassa cards, ID documents and drugs By IOL Reporter Share DURBAN - POLICE arrested a 50-year-old woman on charges of drug possession, possession of stolen property and contravention of the National Credit Regulation and Home Affairs acts during a raid in Birchwood Park, Mariannhill. Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said police officers from the Provincial Organised Crime Unit went to execute a search warrant in Lobelia Road where they observed what was going on at the premises. “The team stormed the premises and a search was conducted. A 50-year-old woman was found hiding drugs in a deep freezer. A total of 401 blue and white heroin capsules and 61 crack cocaine were found,” Mbele said. ....
Why NPA dropped charges against 12 protesting UKZN students By Karen Singh Share DURBAN - The KZN Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office said the case against 12 protesting University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) students was withdrawn last week because there was no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution. The 12 students, most of whom were members of the universityâs SRC, were arrested on February 24, 2021, and first appeared in the Pinetown Magistrateâs Court the next day. The provincial director of public prosecutions advocate Elaine Zungu said after careful consideration of all the evidence, as well as the representations made by counsel for the accused, the senior public prosecutor decided to withdraw the charge of public violence against the students. ....
Bail for cop on murder, kidnapping charges By Anelisa Kubheka Share DURBAN - A DURBAN metro officer with the Multi Operational Response Team (Mort) was granted bail on Monday in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court. He faces charges of attempted murder and kidnapping of a 13-year-old boy. The constable, 33, appeared in court following his arrest on Sunday, on allegations that he assaulted and forced the child to drink petrol because he suspected the child of stealing in Savannah Park. Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed their investigation and the officer’s arrest. National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Natasha Kara said the policeman was granted bail of R2 000, with conditions that he was not allowed to interfere or communicate with victims and witnesses. ....
