WHMI 93.5 Local News : Brighton School Board Votes To Refinance Bonds

The Brighton Board of Education has voted to refinance several million dollars in bonds from the 2012 school bond issue in order to save substantial interest costs.
At a recent meeting, the board unanimously moved to refinance $8.3 million in general obligation bonds to take advantage of the prevailing low-interest rates. The action is expected to save district taxpayers about $300,000 in interest costs over the term of the bonds. Brighton Assistant Supt. for Business & Finance Michael Engelter says the district already refinanced a large portion of the 2012 bond issue last June, getting an interest rate varying from 1.02% to 2.84%, depending on the series - a gross saving of $5.39 million in interest over the life of the bonds. ....

WHMI 93.5 Local News : BAS Announces "Love Your Pet Day" Contest Winners

Two sisters who attend Spencer Elementary School have been announced as the winners of the Brighton Area Schoolsâ âLove Your Pet Dayâ promotion.
Over 100 students âfrom Tot Spot to 8th gradeâ participated in the contest, in which the winner will get to spend a class day with Buckley, one of the school districtâs âPack of Dogsâ.
The winners were announced Tuesday by Karen Storey, a Brighton special education teacher who founded and directs the districtâs much-emulated Pack of Dogs program. The contest took place in conjunction with the national âLove Your Pet Dayâ promotion, which was held last weekend. The school contest was based on students submitting a photo of themselves with their dog, the panel basing its selection of the winner on the best photo. ....
