National Fire and Emergency plans put out for public feedback

Principal rural fire officer Bradley Shanks is encouraging the public to share their views on their local fire plan.
Last year the service received feedback from the community and partner agencies during a formal consultation trial in Northland, Hawke’s Bay and Otago.
Manawatū’s principal rural fire officer Bradley Shanks said it was important for the public to share their views on the fire plan in their region.
“It will help for when we should implement our fire restrictions and when to lift them. The more people that respond the better quality plan we will have.” ....

A restricted fire season is in place in the Rangitīkei, Manawatū and Palmerston North rural districts from 8am on Wednesday, February 24.
Principal rural fire officer Bradley Shanks said ground conditions in the districts have changed enough to require the move from an open to restricted season.
A restricted fire season means you will need to apply for a permit for any outdoor fire and follow the conditions listed on your fire permit, Shanks said. ....

Fire crews battle massive forest blaze in Manawatū

“We couldn t risk our crews. This is the first day we ve been able to get the ground crews in properly to do some work.
“It s still uncontrolled, but we re making really good headway with the air assets and the ground crews are just starting to fight the fire.”
Heavy machinery was used to cut fire breaks into the dirt overnight to halt the spread of flames, but the blaze had scorched through 40ha of plantation by 7am. This had expanded to 45ha at 11.30am and 53ha at 5pm, and was 95 per cent under control by then. ....
