On 1 July, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Vladanka Andreeva of North Macedonia as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, with the host Government s approval.
Ms. Andreeva brings 21 years of experience in international development, humanitarian coordination, advocacy, and partnership building, which she has acquired within the United Nations and externally through multiple assignments across Europe and Asia. At the United Nations, she most recently held the position of Country Director for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in Cambodia and led the United Nations Country Team Task Force for COVID-19 preparedness and response. The growing needs and challenges necessitate more extensive collaboration beyond the traditional boundary of disaster response and call for innovative approaches and solutions including the engagement of the private sector.
The role of the private sector is becoming a critical part of global efforts to reduce risks and enhance the effectiveness of interventions, by providing not only financial resources but also advanced technologies and technical expertise.
The Asia Pacific region, in particular, shows great potential for such collaboration. The COVID-19 pandemic was in many an unexpected event that caught the world off guard. The World Economic Forum s 2020 Global Risks Report, for example, did not include pandemics in its list of 10 most likely risks.
However, while the pandemic was unexpected, it was not unavoidable.
A number of global framework and guidelines were developed in recent years to prevent and manage the occurrence of such disasters.
Key among them is the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which includes biological hazards, such as pandemics, as one of the main risks that countries ought to plan against in line with the International Health Regulations (2005). ....
