Forensic Center: Overall deaths jumped more than 11% in 2020 in Knox, Anderson counties; homicides saw sharp rise


The report addresses deaths that fall under the medical examiner s jurisdiction.
The hundreds of COVID-19 deaths reported in 2020 in the two counties aren t addressed in the overall death report. Abbey Harris with the Knox County Mayor s Office said COVID deaths aren t medical examiner cases.

Trends that stood out among the two counties, according to the Forensic Center:
Natural deaths rose 20 percent. There were 595 natural deaths in Knox County last year and 88 natural deaths in Anderson County, the report shows.
Gun deaths increased 62 percent.
Accidental deaths were up 20 percent.
Suicides rose 14 percent.

Forest Department officials suspect poisoning
Sixteen peahens and six peacocks were found dead on a farm at Keezhapoigaipatti village near Manapparai in the district on Monday.
The dead birds were found lying scattered in and around the agricultural land belonging to a farmer, Rasu. Forest Department officials visited the spot based on information from local residents.
A Forest Department officer said samples from the carcasses were taken and would be sent to the Regional Forensic laboratory at Tiruchi to determine the cause of the deaths of the birds. The officer suspected that the death of the birds could be due to poisoning but said it ....
