$67.4m in Budget to help public sector cut carbon from cars and boilers, but what about flying?


Under the Government’s plan for the public service to be carbon-neutral by 2025, public organisations must plan how they’ll cut gases, cull unnecessary vehicles from their fleets, choose EVs (electric vehicles) when they can, and lease better-insulated large buildings.
Climate Change Minister James Shaw described the 2025 offset deadline as a “a bit of a rod for agencies’ backs”.
“If you haven t managed to eliminate your emissions by 2025 you re going to have to pay for the work that you haven’t done,” said Shaw.
But there’s a carrot to go with that stick.
Shaw today announced $67.4m of new funding will be in the Budget to help the public sector cut emissions. $41.7m of that is for EECA to help other public agencies lease cleaner car fleets, three-quarters for co-funding vehicle leases and the remainder for offering fleet-greening advice. ....

A milestone for jobs, businesses and regional economic development in Bay of Plenty is being marked as construction gets underway on the multi-million dollar Ōpōtiki harbour infrastructure project.
Economic and Regional Development Minister Stuart Nash has joined Whakatōhea iwi, local councils and representatives of the aquaculture and marine industry at a ceremony with the Prime Minister to celebrate the beginning of the harbour construction.
“We are today celebrating the growth of a community which is now able to move from strength to strength,” Mr Nash said. “The government is investing more than $112 million in three major infrastructure projects as part of the Ōpōtiki Harbour Development project. ....

A milestone for Bay of Plenty jobs, businesses and regional economic development is being marked as construction gets under way on the multimillion-dollar Ōpōtiki harbour infrastructure project.
