Transgender volunteers winning hearts at DMCH

Holding a placard inscribed with I am a volunteer. How can I help you? Sagarika was waiting at the entrance of Dhaka Medical College Hospital s Covid-19 unit. As soon as an ambulance arrived, she rushed towards it, helping the patient get off from the vehicle.
As the patient got down, she helped the wheelchair-bound patient get to the Covid-19 unit, while providing necessary instructions to family members.
Sagarika is one of 15 members of a group of volunteers serving patients at DMCH, 10 of whom, including Sagarika, are from the transgender community.
Clad in orange jackets, the volunteers have been an ever-present sight at the hospital since April 14, the first day of the current phase of the lockdown. ....

Three patients died while they were being evacuated after a fire broke out at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) dedicated for Covid-19 patients at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday morning.
The deceased are PDB Engineer Kazi Golam Mostafa, 66, from Chandpur, Kishore Chandra Roy,70, of Tangail and madrasa teacher Abdullah Al Mahmud, 48, of Manikganj. All of them were on life support.
All the patients were transferred from the ICU after the fire broke out. But the three patients who were on life support died while undergoing treatment at the CCU later, DMCH Director Brig Gen Nazmul Haque said. ....

Three COVID patients in intensive care have died after a fire triggered an evacuation at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The patients who were receiving life-supporting treatment through ventilators were transferred to another building of the hospital after the blaze on Wednesday.

The fire broke out in the ICU ward on the second floor of the new building at around 8 am on Wednesday. ....

The sudden and awful incident forced him to evacuate the ICU and shift his ailing brother Abdullah Al Mahmud, 48, a critical Covid-19 patient, like attendants of 13 other ICU patients there.
Three of those ICU patients, including Bulbul s brother, died after they were relocated.
Two other dead were identified as Engineer Kazi Golam Mostafa, 66, of Chandpur, and Kishore Chandra Roy, 70, of Tangail.
Some of the 14 critical patients were taken to a nearby coronary care unit (CCU) on the same floor of the 10-storey building whereas some were shifted to other wards or hospitals. ....

on the third floor of DMCH’s new building.

The fire broke out around 8:10am and caused dense smoke inside the ICU.
