The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS) has started conducting audits of hospitals treating COVID-19 patients in the State, to ensure all fire safety norms are in place.
The TNFRS officials have inspected over 100 hospitals in the last few months and have given a check-list for the hospitals to follow in order to avert fire accidents.
The spike in COVID-19 cases has left the healthcare system strained, and even a small oversight in safety can lead to a massive fire and the death of patients. “Many fire accidents in temporary COVID-19 care centres and hospitals treating them in different parts of the country were reported recently. Most of the accidents that happened in Mumbai, Vijayawada, Rajkot, happened early in the morning or late at night when there was no one to notice the fire. This led to many deaths. Hence we wanted to ensure that hospitals in the State are safe,” said ....

Launching - Thee (Fire in Tamil) - a mobile application, the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS) department has started conducting regular drills across the State to improve reaction time of its personnel.
One such drill was conducted on Friday and the SM Nagar station in North Chennai won the event.
In 2020, the TNFRS helpline 101 received a total of 5,000 calls in Chennai and out of this 2,150 were fire calls and the remaining were rescue calls. Now people have to download the ‘Thee’ app and press the help button in it. The control room will get an alert in a few seconds and based on the GPS location of the caller, the nearest fire station will be alerted. ....

Two children, who closed an open drain braving the rain, were appreciated and rewarded by Director General of Police, Fire Services, C. Sylendra Babu.
A video of two children trying to close an open drain on the roadside went viral on social media recently. As the children were walking, one of them noticed the drain and they covered it with some nearby wooden material.
The children were identified as A. Devayani and her brother A. Vignesh.
Mr. Babu gave out a cash award of ₹2,000, books and gifts to the children, who met him at the headquarters of the Fire and Rescue Services Department. Priya Ravichandran, Joint Director, Fire Services, and the parents of the children were also present. ....
