Airspeed Ltd. (est. 1931) the same company which created the Horsa glider designed and produced this highly modern for its day twin engine airliner. The Ambassador 2 went into regular service in 1951 having a pressurized cabin, with a clean aerodynamic style, successfully satisfying a niche for short as well as medium haul revenue flights. Its pair of Bristol Centaurus 661 radial engines (18 cylinders and 2625 hp each) were relied upon to fly 60 passengers, though 47 was the common configuration, and three crew 720 miles at 300 mph.
