The Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has ordered Peel Police to pay $35,000 in damages due to the handcuffing of a Black six-year-old girl back in September of 2016.
On September 30, 2016, staff members at the young girl’s Peel District School Board elementary school board called Peel Police in assistance of police presence due to “violent behaviour” from the young girl.
Two white Peel police officers attended the school where they bound the six-year-old by not only her wrists, but her ankles as well after the girl tried to get away from the officers. She was held in these restraints on her stomach for 28 minutes. It wasn’t the first-time police were called by staff members of the school regarding the young girl.  ....

On Sept. 30, two white Peel police constables attended a public school in Mississauga after administrators asked for assistance with the girl, who they said was acting violently at the time.
During their interaction, the Human Rights Tribunal said that the constables placed the young girl on her stomach and cuffed her at the wrists and ankles. ....

TORONTO
The Peel Regional Police Board has been ordered by Ontario’s Human Rights Tribunal to pay $35,000 in damages after a six-year-old Black girl was handcuffed by officers at her Mississauga school more than four years ago.
“In handcuffing the applicant’s hands behind her back and holding her on her stomach with her ankles handcuffed for at least 28 minutes, the officers violated the applicant’s rights under Sec. 1 of the Human Rights Code to equal treatment in the provision of services by treating her in a way they would not have treated a white child,” tribunal adjudicator Brenda Bowlby wrote in her decision rendered on Dec. 31, 2020. ....
