Vaccines, grad preparations, facilities discussed at Living Sky board

Vickers told the trustees that their Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction Cathy Herrick was attending a health meeting that day at which time it was expected more information would be shared about the plan.
As well, Vickers provided an update on graduation guidelines. The guidelines had come out last week from the province and in her written report Vickers indicated the guidelines are still tight, including recommendations for virtual or live streamed events, or alternatively either drive-in or outdoor ceremonies.
Vickers expected that her hunch was that they would hear on May 17 that more students and family members will be allowed to join the ceremony if it is outside. ....

Living Sky division still navigating COVID-19 challenges

Vickers reported that school divisions are waiting for quote a third-party provider to offer those. According to her report, right now the Miinistry of Health is working with Sask Builds and Procurement on developing a request for pre-qualifications tender for third party providers to deliver testing.
There was also an update on where things stood in the division with respect to level 3 of the Saskatchewan Safe Schools Plan. Vickers noted only one school in the division was at level 3 at the moment, that being North Battleford Comprehensive High School, meaning that “sometimes (students are) at school and sometimes they’re at home.” ....

Living Sky division meets MLAs in virtual presentation

The school board meeting with MLAs usually happens on an annual basis, but this one was notable because of the large number of new faces at the table. Both Cockrill and Domotor are brand new MLAs and the ten-member Living Sky board itself has five new trustees, so for them it was as much a chance to get to know one another and their concerns for the first time.
Even more notable was that this particular MLAs meeting was the first to be conducted entirely virtually on the Microsoft Teams platform due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
Not surprisingly, the pandemic and all the issues the school board faced in dealing with it came up frequently during the meeting. But board chair Ronna Pethick expressed pride in the division’s staff for how they worked to ensure students “continue to learn, continue to succeed and continue to grow,” all the while keeping them safe. ....

CUPE hopes to see more support for education workers

CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) is concerned about protecting education support workers against possible exposure to COVID-19, and would like to see a provincial mandate put forward.
Rob Westfield, chair of the Saskatchewan Education Workers’ steering committee for CUPE and also an education support worker himself, said rather than each school division in the province implementing its own directives there should be one common policy for all.
“All of the support workers want to work,” he said. “We want to educate students. However, we also want to be safe. And we want the students to be safe as well.” ....
