Queen's students mobilize to raise funds for grassroots organizations in India

As India faces devastation at the hands of the COVID-19 pandemic, Queen’s students have mobilized to financially support those affected.
Harshavardhan Thyagarajan MSc ’23, Prerna Subramanian, PhD candidate in Cultural Studies, and Myron Menezes, MASc ’21, are among a group of students collaborating with the International Students Working Group (ISWG) to raise funds for grassroots organizations in India. 
With at least 26 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country, and numbers growing hundreds of thousands by the day, India is being confronted with the worst of the pandemic.

Gandhinagar: The alumni of Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar have issued a statement highlighting college’s exclusionary measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, which, they say, would further marginalise students who don’t come from privileged backgrounds.
According to the statement, the college has demanded students to pay a “flat quarantine charge” of Rs 4,000 if they want to seek quarantine facilities on the campus. #PivottheClock campaign asks University to extend funding for PhD students


In an interview with 
The Journal, Christopher Bennet, a PhD candidate in gender studies, pointed out that all PhD students have had their work disrupted in one way or another. Workloads have increased across the board as TAs are relied upon more heavily throughout online learning. Many students have also been unable to complete their research due to campus closures.
Bennett added that, prior to COVID-19, the average PhD student at Queen’s took five years to complete their degree, making the expectation that current students complete their degrees within four years unreasonable.
