Restrictions lifted: What day one without public health orders looked like in Saskatoon

In Saskatoon on Sunday, it felt more like a normal summer day as individuals took advantage of the sunshine and the end to all provincial health orders.
Sports on Tap in Praireland Park held a couple of events, the first of which was a beach volleyball tournament.
“It does feel very normal, very strange because yesterday we had the masks, and now we don’t. It’s amazing, just back to normal,” Francine Puech, one of the tournaments participants told CTV News.
Puech said it was a great day to be enjoying the first mask-free day in over a year, but that doesn’t mean she will be leaving it at home. ....

Moosomin Downs announcement of new race track 'rescuing' the horse race industry in the province

On Friday Moosomin First Nation Economic Development Corporation announced plans to build a horse race track northwest of the Saskatoon, giving life to the sport in the province. The race track will be named Moosomin Downs.
“Overall it’s good to see that there is an interest to bringing life…. or rescuing the horse racing industry from its demise here in Saskatchewan,” apprentice jockey Nicole Hein said. 
Moosomin Downs will consist of 124 acres of land northwest of the city near Highway 16, in the R.M of Corman Park.
Neil Sasakamoose, a project member for Moosomin Downs, estimates the costs of the project will be $40 million. ....

'We stayed in the same spot for three hours': Saskatoon residents share their experiences trying to get COVID-19 vaccine

Saskatoon residents are sharing their different experiences when it comes to getting their COVID-19 vaccine.
Henry Miranda arrived at the Prairieland Park Drive-Thru site around 5:40 a.m. on Saturday to get his first dose.
“I figured that waking up early would give me a bit of a head start, even then, the amount of people here was quite a lot,” said Miranda.
He ended up leaving Prairieland Park around 10:40 a.m., spending an estimated time of five hours in line.
On the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) s website, it estimated the drive-thru wait times at 8 a.m. to be 6 hours. ....

Locals Bring Message of Support and Concern for Marquis Downs, to City Council

Numerous speakers attended the City’s Planning and Development committee Monday regarding concerns over Prairieland Park’s shutdown of Marquis Downs.
Eddie Esquirol, President of the Saskatchewan Division of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association says in addition to how horse racing benefits the province’s economy, agribusiness and employment, even more important is how it helps youth.
“I’ve seen at risk youth come to the track and work in the back stretch.  Here they learn to care for animals, how to do chores, and how to work with mentors who come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and will teach them responsibility and pride.” ....

Saskatoon drive-thru vaccine clinic extended through Wednesday, open to those 37+


The first-come, first-served clinic reopened on Saturday and was originally scheduled to run through Tuesday.
The clinic, located at Praireland Park, is open from 8 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) is also offering a limited number of first-come, first-served doses at its clinic located at SaskTel Centre.
The STC clinic runs from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. daily.
The age-based eligibility for immunization at the clinic is 37 and older.
As of April 30, additional priority workers became eligible for immunization: police, firefighters, volunteer firefighters, public health inspectors, teachers and educational staff working with students. ....
