Quick response doused mountain fire in Simon’s Town

Cape Town - A quick response made light work of a mountain fire in Simon’s Town, that threatened to spread out of control.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said its services were alerted to a fire on the mountain slopes, above Signal School, at about 5.55am.
Ten fire engines and about 50 firefighters were on scene, assisted by Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), and a Navy crew.
“Two Oryx helicopters were requested from Ysterplaat Air Force Base to assist with water bombing,” said Carelse. ....

Andy Davies of lobby group Friends of Table Mountain hopes the ministry engages with all lobby groups and public views.
Environmental Affairs Minister Barbara Creecy visited the fire-ravaged Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) this weekend to see firsthand the devastation caused by a massive blaze.
Her department now plans to re-evaluate environmental disaster management.
Andy Davies of lobby group Friends of Table Mountain, speaks to Refilwe Moloto about concerns they have.
Davies says he hopes Creecy will address all the serious issues plaguing the TMNP.

Cape Town Fire: SANParks praises bravery of firefighters
SANParks estimates that the fire has destroyed 600 hectares of land in the TMNP thus far.
 The South African National Parks (SANParks) praised the bravery and dedication of firefighters in their efforts to contain the Cape Town fire which destroyed the Table Mountain National Park.
Those involved in containing the fire included the volunteers, City of Cape Town (CoCT) Fire, Rescue Services and Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) rangers, amongst others.
“The devastating fires across the TMNP have brought home the value of partnerships and working together as a community to manage this National Park we all love. ....

PMB student tells of UCT fire terror

Durban - TA’RIQ Mohabir, of Pietermaritzburg, had just settled in at a student residence at the University of Cape Town (UCT) on Wednesday when, within just four days, a wildfire ripped through the area.
“We were in our residence when we saw thick clouds of smoke to the point that we felt we could not breathe. It was so hot. It felt like heaters were on in our rooms. Outside was just as hot,” said Mohabir.
The wildfire started on Sunday morning at Rhodes Memorial. It later spread to UCT, then towards the Devil’s Peak Estate/Vredehoek area of the Cape Town City Bowl. Mohabir, 19, a first-year student, is studying business science in actuarial science. He was based at the Glenres Campus. ....
